Clean Properties has been using bacteria as a means of removing petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons from the environment for many years.

Clean Properties works with facultative bacteria blends, meaning that they can survive under both aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (low to no oxygen) conditions. As the availability of oxygen in the subsurface changes due to changing site conditions, the bacteria are capable of adapting to the changing micro-environments. So what does that mean for you? These bacteria have a better chance of surviving than many of the popular blends that are anaerobic only, so they can continue to thrive and break down contamination when other populations may die off, which would necessitate additional costly rounds of applications.

The Know-how

Clean Properties has successfully employed bacteria to clean soils and groundwater impacted by oil and hazardous waste in many challenging situations. Just placing the bacteria in the ground alone usually does not result in the desired breakdown of targeted pollutants. Oxidation-reduction potential, dissolved oxygen content, nutrient availability and baseline contaminant concentrations are just a few variables that must be considered and may require adjustment to achieve the desired outcome.

Aside from these parameters, getting the bacteria where they need to be can often be a challenge. Determining the proper means of application to ensure adequate contact with contamination is crucial. Soil type, porosity and transmissivity are a few criterion to keep in mind when designing a remedial approach.

In some situations, it is better to pump groundwater to control the migration of contamination, but then you must find a means to manage the contaminated water. Clean Properties carries all the equipment and licenses necessary to treat and discharge groundwater on-site to help reduce disposal costs.
